Orthodontic Emergencies: What To Do And How We Support You In Adelaide
Orthodontic hiccups can happen at the most inconvenient times. A loose bracket, a pokey wire, or a lost aligner can feel stressful in the moment, but most issues are easy to calm at home with a few simple steps.
At Straight Smile Centre, our Specialist Orthodontists support patients across Adelaide with clear guidance, reassuring advice, and rapid care when needed. This guide explains what to do straight away, when to contact us, and how to access our after-hours help and virtual check-ins.
First Steps In Any Orthodontic Emergency
Start by staying calm and assessing what is causing discomfort. Then take these simple steps to feel more comfortable:
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe sore gums or cheeks
- Use orthodontic wax to cushion sharp edges or pokey wires
- Switch to a soft diet if biting feels tender
- Keep aligners or any loose brace parts safe
- Contact us for advice if you are unsure or discomfort persists
If there has been facial trauma, heavy bleeding, or severe pain, seek urgent care with your dentist, GP or emergency department first, then contact us so we can coordinate orthodontic follow-up.
Common Problems And Simple At-Home Fixes
Most orthodontic issues can be stabilised at home until we see you.
Brackets And Wires
- Loose bracket on braces
If it is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover sharp edges with wax. If it has fully detached, place it in a small container and bring it to your appointment. - Poking wire
Dry the area and place orthodontic wax over the wire end. If the wire is very long and you feel confident, you can trim a tiny amount using clean nail clippers. Alternatively, gently bend the wire toward the tooth with a clean cotton bud and add wax. - Wire out of a back bracket tube
Use clean tweezers to guide the wire back into the tube. If it will not stay, cover the area with wax until we can see you. - Soreness after an adjustment
Use over-the-counter pain relief as directed, eat soft foods and rinse with warm salt water. This usually settles within a few days.
Clear Aligners
- Lost or cracked aligner
Revert to your previous tray to hold tooth position and contact us. Do not skip ahead without advice. We will guide next steps or arrange a replacement. - Aligner not seating fully
Use your chewies several times a day and follow prompts in your Dental Monitoring app. If it still does not seat, revert to the previous tray and message us. - Sharp or rough attachment
Apply a small amount of wax and let us know. We can smooth or polish it at your next visit.
Elastics, Hooks And Attachments
- Broken elastic hook or loose attachment
Stop wearing elastics on that side and contact us for guidance. Only continue elastics on the other side if instructed. - Irritated cheeks or lips
Use wax over brackets or hooks, apply lip balm and rinse with warm salt water.
Sore Gums, Ulcers Or Irritation
- Warm salt-water rinses two to three times daily
- Wax on the area causing friction
- A pharmacy ulcer gel for symptom relief
If irritation lasts longer than a week, reach out to us.
Can Orthodontic Emergencies Be Handled At Home?
Often, yes. Many problems are minor discomforts or small breakages that you can make comfortable quickly. Use the steps above, then check in with us.
Contact us sooner if you notice:
- A wire or bracket you cannot stabilise with wax
- An aligner that will not seat even with chewies and a previous tray
- Pain that does not improve, swelling, or signs of infection
- Trauma or a tooth that feels very loose
